How is a Czech glass nail file produced?

Original Czech glass nail files made by Aveniro ® are produced by acid etching.

Glass files - quality control

Acid-etched glass nail files – unique microstructure

The chemical process forms microscopic grinding spikes right on the glass body, so the abrasive surface does not blunt or wear out. In comparison with common metal or paper nail files or Chinese glass nail files with grinding grains glued to a base, no grinding grains fall off. The abrasive surface has a virtually unlimited lifespan – it still works after 20 years.

All glass files from Aveniro production are chemically hardened, which significantly increases their mechanical resistance.

The microstructure of the abrasive surface is unique. The grinding elements are sharp, very uniform and evenly distributed on the surface. These outstanding surface features make nail filing effective but gentle at the same time.

Czech glass nail files produced according to the patented technology:

  • Have sharp abrasive particles formed right on the glass body
  • The particles are uniformly distributed
  • They are similar in size and shape
  • They point perpendicularly up

This combination ensures quality gentle filing. Czech glass nail files do not chip and tear the nails, they make them smooth instead.

Other types of nail files typically:

  • Have abrasive particles glued to the base
  • The particles are unevenly distributed over the surface
  • They are divergent in shape and size
  • They point in opposite directions

Treatment with such abrasive surfaces tears and damages the nail. Over time, the glue gets loose, the grinding particles fell off the and the file gets dull.

Production technology in detail

Glass files - grinding

Raw material

Glass nail files are made from flat float glass. In fact, this is glass similar to window glass. The composition of the glass is the same as similar kinds of glass (sodium-calcium-silicate glass), so it does not contain any heavy metals or other undesirable substances.

Production steps

The first production step is the formation of the abrasive surface. Glass sheets are subjected to chemical etching (acid engraving, action of a mixture of acids on the glass surface). The production technology is a modification of the process of glass etching that has been used in the glass industry for centuries. The grinding elements are formed right on the glass body, which distinguishes Czech glass nail files from other types of files.

The chemical reaction produces a very evenly roughened and sharp abrasive surface, which gives the grinding surface of Czech glass nail files its outstanding abrasive qualities.

This is followed by cutting the shape of the glass file. The glass sheets are cut into small stripes (of desired shapes and sizes), and then the edges of the stripes are grinded to make them smooth.

The next step is chemical hardening, in which the glass files are subjected to melted potassium nitrate under high temperatures. During the hardening process, smaller sodium ions in surface layers of glass are exchanged for bigger potassium ions. Hardening increases the surface tension and overall firmness and mechanical resistance of the tempered glass nail files. Sorting and quality control are subsequently carried out, completing the production process of the plain tempered glass files.

Many of the produced files are further decorated. A broad range of standard designs and decorations and customisations are available depending on customers’ requests. After the files are decorated, they undergo further quality control. Finally, the files are packed into individual cases, then into inner boxes and export cartons.

Quality control

In its production of glass files, Aveniro emphasizes top-notch quality and high-class workmanship. A majority of manufacturing operations are performed in a traditional manual manner that enables running quality control. Standards are stipulated for all production operations, against which the products are inspected after each operation. Moreover, all products are subjected to a one-hundred-percent final inspection.

This system guarantees the outstanding quality of glass nail files made by Aveniro, Czech Republic.
